Apple iOS 9 News: Home Sharing to Return After Backlash
Apple plans to bring back the Home Sharing feature when they release the next operating system iOS 9. Users were unhappy when iOS 8.4 was released and Home Sharing was disabled, CNET reports.
Apple's Senior Vice President Eddy Cue said in a tweet late Monday night, "We are working to have Home Sharing in iOS 9." Cue was responding to a tweet that asked how hard it would be to get Home Sharing back.
"I hope I don't have to be @taylorswift13 to get you to restore Home Sharing for music," the tweet read.
Home Sharing was a feature that let users share their entire central iTunes library across the home network with other devices. This meant that music could be shared to other computers, an Apple TV and other devices.
Apple recently released the new Apple Music service with iOS 8.4 and disabled the capability to share music on Home Sharing.
The notes in the iOS 8.4 beta listed that Home Sharing was "currently not available." Some thought this meant that it could return at some point.
Apple may have decided to remove the Home Sharing feature to encourage users to sign up for the Apple Music family plan. The $14.99 plan allows up to six users to access an entire library of iTunes music.
Apple might be working on getting some license issues solved. The company could be trying to solve those issues before they let users share music acquired from Apple Music to others.
For now, users who want to share their iTunes library among several devices at home will either have to sign up for the Apple Music family plan or sign up for a $24.99 per month iCloud solution. Some users have reported problems with the iCloud Music Library, so it may be worth waiting to see when Apple resurrects Home Sharing.
