Wednesday’s chance of winning big at Powerball has arrived.

Last Saturday, the winning numbers were: 3, 6, 14, 18 and 24, and the Powerball was 21. The jackpot now currently stands at $40 million with a $24.4 million cash value.

Following last Saturday's drawing, there were 394,339 regular winners, and $9,348,191 in non-jackpot money was won. There are actually nine ways to win at Powerball, with a 1 in 175,223,510.00 in winning the grand prize, and 1 in 5,153,632.65 in winning $1,000,000.

As reported by Lohud, those odds will be changing soon.

Starting on Oct. 7, the chances of winning the jackpot will become 1 in 292,201,338. As it will get harder to win the jackpot, the odds of doubling your money by winning $4 from a $2 ticket will go from 1 in 111 to 1 in 92.

The change is all about making the smaller prizes more available. As expressed by the state Gaming Commission in a memo sent to its board members, "The rules change is intended to increase the odds of winning any prize, while making it more difficult to win the jackpot prize."

The Gaming Commission felt that the changes are needed, stating, "Without these rules changes, the (Lottery) Division would need to remove the Powerball game from its portfolio of offerings and aid to education would be negatively affected."

Robert Williams, the executive director of the state Gaming Commission, reiterated the goals of the change, saying, "The proposed rule is intended to increase the odds of winning any prize while decreasing the odds to win the jackpot."

In other Powerball news, a resident of Raeford, North Carolina, named Dorothy Myers, matched all five white balls in the July 4 drawing and won $2 million. As reported by WRAL, Myers said, “I’ve been playing the Powerball ever since the lottery first came to North Carolina.”

“I always play the same six numbers. For the first five numbers, I use mine and my four sisters’ birthdays, and for the Powerball I use my mother’s,” the lucky winner who received a check for $1,385,000, after federal and state taxes were taken out, continued.
