Maryland police are searching for two gunmen who fatally shot three people and wounded a fourth person near the University of Maryland, Baltimore, campus Tuesday night.

Police said the shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m., in the 900 block of W. Fayette St. in the Poppleton neighborhood, near the university's Baltimore campus, reports The Baltimore Sun. A burgundy van and a white van pulled to the side of a road, and an armed man jumped out of each vehicle to open fire at a group of people just a few blocks from the college.

Det. Rashawn K. Strong released a statement Wednesday morning stating that two men and one woman were shot and killed, reports USA Today. A fourth woman was hospitalized for a gunshot wound to the buttocks and listed in stable condition.

Police also said that the shooting was targeted, but no arrests had been made. Officials do not believe any college students were involved.

"This was not a random act of violence but was a targeted incident," reads a police statement, according to The Sun.

The three deaths, along with a separate fatal stabbing on Tuesday, has raised Baltimore's homicide rate to 155 for the year, which is almost a 50-percent jump compared with the same time last year, notes The Associated Press.

Campus police said that Tuesday's shooting also marked the second in the block within a week. Meanwhile, residents in the neighborhood said gunfire is a common occurrence in the area.

"It wasn't unusual to happen around here. It happens all the time," said James Gilliard, 43, who lives nearby. "But when it's females getting shot up it's just crazy."

Janice Babus, a 59-year-old research technician at the university, said she has become "almost numb" to the constant alerts about shootings near the campus.

"It doesn't make no sense what's going on in the streets," said Cheryl Valentine, 57, who was watching a movie with her daughter in Poppleton when the shooting took place. "The killing needs to stop. We aren't hurting nobody but the families."
