12-Year-Old Boy Arrested For Murder of 31-Year-Old Man
Officials arrested a 12-year-old boy in connection to a gang-related murder that took place in late June.
On Wednesday, officials said that the young fugitive, identified as Jarrell Milton, is connected to the shooting death of 31-year-old Jamymell Ray of Omaha, Nebraska. Police say that Ray was allegedly trying to sell marijuana to three minors in an Omaha park, but the youths turned on him and shot and killed him on June 29. Another man who was with the victim was also shot but survived with minor injuries.
According to police, the three youths lured the victims to a park in order to rob them. However, at some point, they opened fire, police said.
"All three suspects had guns," Douglas County Attorney Don Kleine said, KETV reports. "Two guns (were) recovered. To have young people at this age involved in that kind of violence is very troubling."
Milton's older brother, Jamar, 17, and Shawn-Tavious Primes-Willis, 15, were arrested on charges of first-degree murder in the shooting, but the 12-year-old managed to get away. He was found a week later, hundreds of miles away from the crime scene, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is still unclear how the preteen traveled so far in just over a week.
"How did he get to Minnesota? Who was he staying with? Did someone provide transportation or assistance in trying to hide him, knowing that he was wanted by police?" Kleine said, reports CBS Minnesota.
Officials believe that gangs may have been involved in the shooting.
"We are very concerned about older gang members putting pressure on younger members to do their dirty work," Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said in a statement. "They are barely at the age for intervention."
The two teenagers have been charged as adults, but the 12-year-old will be charged as a juvenile.
