The DC Cinematic Universe is starting to fill out with many new projects on the horizon, which includes a "Justice League" and "Aquaman" film. Now, fans can add a standalone "Batman" film to the roster as Ben Affleck has been tapped to co-write, direct and star in, according to Deadline.

Make no mistake, the surge of the comic book film arena has been shattering box-office records now for over a decade and the warring rivals of Marvel and DC may just bring the onscreen matchups to a new, epic level.

Plans for the movie will first start with Affleck and Geoff Johns scribing a screenplay for the film. The upcoming "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice" film has been a highly anticipated event now for months, and with a 2016 release date, the hype is only beginning to fill out.

For those who wonder about Johns' credentials for writing the film, you should know that he is the chief creative officer over at DC Comics and he is well versed in everything DC. His co-scribe credits for this film will no doubt make sure the Batman universe will remain authentic for the brand and the fans.

Studio sources have revealed to Deadline that Johns and Affleck are very much in sync on the project and will permeate a great screenplay to further the ambitions of the Cinematic Universe venture.

The last two "Batman" films both brought in over $1 billion at the box-office and the brand itself is a heavyweight in that arena, according to Box Office Mojo.

At the time of its release back in 2008, "The Dark Knight" was only the second film to ever gross over $500 million at the domestic box-office. There have since been three more films added to that list.

"The Dark Knight Rises" brought in $1.08 billion at the box-office back in 2012 and has been heralded by most as a fitting conclusion to "The Dark Knight" trilogy.
