El Chapo's escape from prison was a surprise, but the moment he went for it was caught on camera.

In a video released by the Mexican government, the notorious drug lord can be seen making his escape through a hatch in his shower, reports The New York Times.

The video shows the drug lord seen walking back and forth around his cell and eventually crouches behind a short wall by his shower until he is no longer in view.

According to CNN, this is not the first time that Guzmán escaped. In 2001 he escaped from prison in a laundry cart. The drug lord, whose real name is Joaquín Guzmán, spent the last 13 years on the run and hiding from authorities until he was caught again in 2014.

Guzmán spent years leading the Sinaloa Cartel and is the reason the cartel built several tunnels to improve the transportation of drugs into the U.S. via hidden passages. He is considered to be worth over a billion dollars, according to Forbes, and is to blame for over 25 percent of the drugs that go from Mexico to the United States.

After his escape on July 11, authorities at the Altiplano Federal Prison, which is reportedly Mexico's highest security prison, discovered a 20-inch hole located on the shower floor that led to a tunnel large enough to walk in. The tunnel contained light, ventilation and led Guzmán to a motorcycle that would take him to an opening in a nearby construction site.

Mexican authorities are currently on a nationwide manhunt to find the drug lord and have received help from the U.S. government. While the escape was undetected by prison authorities, it was not unforeseen.

The Associated Press reports documents from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration show that Mexican officials were warned about a possible escape 16 months ago.
