It is something that has being going on now for the past couple of years: resurrecting old movies and rebooting them for TV. But this time, the 1984 film "The Last Starfighter" will take its original cues and break the barrier, according to an article on Variety.

Back in 1984, "The Last Starfighter" embraced the onslaught of technology and was one of the first films to feature computer-generated special effects (CGI). It is now back to take the next step in a market that is already thoroughly saturated with CGI films.

The next logical step would be to take the viewing experience for a movie, or a television show, and make it interactable. This is accomplished with the emerging gaming technology of virtual reality and those behind "The Last Starfighter" reboot will team up with Surreal.tv to create it.

With products like Oculus Rift and others, the viewer will be able to immerse himself or herself into the TV show and during special scenes, be able to use his/her VR headset and see special realities, such as the inside of the spaceship or buildings as well as various scenes.

The writer for the original film was Jonathan Betuel and he has come back with this new idea to take his story and expand on it with the new technology that he proposes to break the barriers of interactive TV.

"It's a very interesting blend," Betuel told Variety. "The otherworldiness of it lends itself to VR."

Surreal bills itself as a media company that wants "to change the way people experience entertainment."

"We create and distribute short-form immersive video across content platforms, new and traditional, including virtual reality devices," their website explains.

The series is not expected to be directly about the characters or story of the original movie, but rather about a universe that has emerged around the story. It has been titled "The Starfighter Chronicles."

There is no word yet as to where the series is expected land in terms of networks or streaming platforms. Although, given the non-linear feel for the project, a streaming platform would be the most logical venue for series.

However, Surreal has confirmed on their Twitter account that they are partaking in the project.
