Netflix Releases Trailer for ‘Narcos’ Series Based on Drug War in the ‘80s [WATCH]
The new trailer for the upcoming Netflix series "Narcos," which chronicles the rise of the war on the drugs in the '80s, features thrilling content from characters that were based on the real life Medellin cartel.
The two opposing headliners of the series are Pablo Escobar (Jose Padilha) against Steve Murphy (Boyd Holbrook) and Javier Pena (Pedro Pascal), according to Deadline. Murphy and Pena were the real-life DEA agents that battled Escobar and his ruthless cartel to seize millions in cash and cocaine during the rise of the expansive cocaine trade in America.
The trailer starts out with a calm and cool beginning, where the narrator asks the viewer to imagine himself born into poverty, but only to reach excessive financial wealth before the age of 28. This mirrors the real story of Escobar, who seized control of the Colombian cocaine trade and capitalized on it beginning in the late '70s and through the '80s.
The series is expected to take many directions with the drug war story, focusing not only on Escobar but other drug kingpins that arise during the era and the hundreds of people who lost their lives in the wake.
Padilha, who rose to fame with "Elite Squad," has reteamed with Wagner Moura in the show. He also serves as the creator and executive producer for the Netflix original series. Padilha is also joined at the executive producer chair with Eric Newman, Doug Miro, Carlo Bernard and Chris Brancato.
Rounding out the cast of this highly anticipated series is Juan Pablo Raba, Joanna Christie, Stephanie Sigman, Manolo Cardona, André Mattos, Luis Guzman and Ana de la Reguera.
USA Today reports the series is expected to drop on Netflix this summer, on Aug. 28. It will have an initial 10-episode run for the first season.
