In the aftermath of The Bachelor's Juan Pablo Galavis's anti-gay comment (in which he apologized via Facebook) and the recent and controversial shutdown of NBC Latino, Latinos in media -- and Latinos in general, who may feel as though the wind has been taken out of their sails a bit -- are in need of a boost.

Well the nominations for the 25th Annual GLAAD Media Awards of 2014 may just be what we're looking for in the interim, especially considering the acknowledgement of Latinos in numerous categories -- there are 37 Spanish-language nominees, including "a stand-alone bid in the novela category for Univision's 'Amores Verdaderos,' which included the wedding of a gay couple."

"The GLAAD Media Awards recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community and the issues that affect their lives," according to the awards' official website.

The Spanish language categories, include: Outstanding Novela, Outstanding Daytime Talk Show Episode, Outstanding Talk Show Interview, Outstanding TV Journalism - Newsmagazine, Outstanding Local TV Journalism, Outstanding Newspaper Article,Outstanding Digital Journalism Article, Outstanding Digital Journalism - Multimedia and Outstanding Local TV Journalism.

While every nomination is notable in its own right and holds a powerful message, there were a few in the Outstanding Newspaper Article and Outstanding Digital Journalism Article categories that stand out for their Latin connection, incorporation of immigration change and relation to Latinos and health.

This includes Outstanding Newspaper Articles: "Gay Ex-mayor Who Fled U.S. Awaits Immigration Change" by Jeremy Roebuck (San Antonio Express-News [San Antonio, Texas]), "Poor Black and Hispanic Men Are the Face of H.I.V." by Donald G. McNeil, Jr. (The New York Times), as well as Outstanding Digital Journalism Article: "Sex, Lies and HIV: When What You Don't Tell Your Partner Is a Crime" by Sergio Hernandez (Buzzfeed.com / ProPublica.org).

There are a variety of mediums and representations by GLAAD regarding Latinos. Last year, the film, Musical Chairs (by Susan Seidelman) starring E.J. Bonilla and Leah Pipes, aired with Spanish subtitles on HBO Latino. About a dancer returning to what she loves after a terrible accident with the help of her friends, it was nominated for a 24th Annual GLAAD Media Award. GLAAD Media Award winner and advocate Laverne Cox played a trans woman in the film.

"Laverne has shared before her critique of the lack of roles in Hollywood for trans actresses that depict trans women in positive non-stereotypical ways. This is doubly the case in Spanish-language media where there are few, if any, roles in scripted television that portray transgender characters and so it is important that the film (was shown) on HBO Latino."

Besides well-known nominees, like singers Lady Gaga and Elton John, or TV show, Orange Is The New Black, or the film, Dallas Buyers Club, who are this year's GLAAD Media Award 2014 Nominees in the Spanish Language categories?
