John Stamos knew the time was now or never for him to get the help he needed for his worsening drinking problem.

The two shows he's slated to star in over the coming months aside, the veteran actor knew it was simply time to start taking better care of himself.

It all came to light on the night of Stamos' June 12 arrest on DUI charges in Beverly Hills. Soon after that, he checked himself into a residential rehab program for the treatment of substance abuse.

People magazine reports those who have worked with the 51-year-old actor describe him as "lovely," "charming" and "always professional," but a pal now also admits his drinking has been a "problem."

Another source close to him adds the recent death of his mother "did a number on him. It's been a hard time."

With a new Fox series ("Grandfathered") set to premiere this fall and the launch of the highly anticipated "Full House" spin off also slated for later this year, Stamos is hoping all those days are now behind him.

According to a source he's now "focusing on his health," and undoubtedly his busy schedule.

Stamos previously starred as Uncle Jesse alongside the Olsen twins in the original 1980s "Full House" series and recently admitted he's often dreamed of the day when he might get the chance to do so again.

"We've been working on this for many, many years," he recently told talk show host Jimmy Kimmel during an appearance on his show.

The new series is slated to feature 13 episodes, with Stamos both producing and starring. It will start as a one-hour reunion show, then morph into a spin off series also starring DJ Tanner (Candace Cameron-Bure) and her three kids, along with her sister Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and neighbor Kimmy Gibbler (Andrea Barber).

Stamos is scheduled to appear in court on the DUI charges Sept. 11.
