In the Turkish border town of Suruc, 28 people attending a political rally have died as a result of what officials are calling a suicide bombing on Monday.

As reported by CNN, Gov. Izzettin Kucuk said the deadly explosion, which left about 100 people wounded, happened at the Amara Cultural Park in Suruc around midday. The bomb went off as a group had gathered to protest for more help rebuilding the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobani, six miles away across the border.

The political group, Sosyalist Gençlik Dernekleri Federasyonu, that was targeted took to Twitter to post information regarding the attack as well as images. Before the explosion they had shared photos of the group's members eating lunch at the park.

The town of Suruc is in a vulnerable spot, located close to Kobani, which has been as area of intense combat between Syrian government troops, Kurdish forces, and the terrorist group ISIS. Suruc has received a large number of Syrian refugees fleeing the conflict.

"Kids were screaming, everyone was screaming and running," Erhan Subasi, an eyewitness, said of the aftermath of the explosion. "Everyone was in a panic but trying to help."

As reported by RT News, Adham Basho, a local politician, said, "Ambulances and private cars are picking up the wounded. Many were killed -- 20 or 30. I am going to the hospital to help out."

Although there has been no immediate claim of responsibility, a Turkish official talking with CNN anonymously relayed the government believes the attack is "retaliation to the Turkish government's fight against terrorism” and called on the international anti-ISIS coalition to "more actively pursue a solution to the crisis in Syria."

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the act: "Terror doesn't have a nation, race or homeland. That is why we have been consistent in underlining the need for a global effort to fight terror."

The U.S. government condemned the attacks through Twitter with a brief statement from the U.S. Embassy in Turkey.

A video of the attack was released on YouTube by a Turkish media outlet. WARNING GRAPHIC:
