The death of Philip Seymour Hoffman has hit Hollywood hard.

The 46-year old was found in his apartment Sunday after a friend called emergency services. The cause of death is apparently a drug over does as sources say he was found in his apartment with a syringe in his arm along with two small bags suspected to contain heroin.

In a 2005 "60 Minute" interview, Hoffman opened up about his post-NYU drama school experience where he got caught up in the fast life of the big city, reports Variety.

"It was all that [drugs and alcohol], yeah, it was anything I could get my hands on... I liked it all," Hoffman was quoted.

According to Daily Mail UK, the first time the Oscar winning actor checked into rehab was at the age of 22 with an addition to alcohol and narcotics. The saving grace of the actor was his stronger addition to fame which fueled him to act in such a brilliant way.

Less than a year ago, May 2013, the actor completed a 10-day detox for drug abuse, which includes snorting heroin, says Variety. TMZ wrote that the actor had checked himself in voluntarily after falling off the wagon, the first time in 23 years, and using heroin for about a week.

Known as a serious actor, when asked if he enjoyed himself while filming, he's sentiment is fun is to be had when the acting is done. The American actor won an Oscar for his portrayal of writer Truman Capote in 2005 for the biographical film "Capote."

"We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone," Hoffman's family said in a statement. "This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers," continued the statement.

The actor has struggled with drugs for more than two decades and is survived by his partner and three children.

There is an outpouring of sympathy and sadness on twitter as fellow celebrities remember the genuis actor.
