Sochi Winter Olympics 2014 Events and Schedule: Host City Has Stray Dog Problem; How Will They Handle It?
Sochi has not been the most welcoming place for world travelers and this week the Russian city found itself embroiled in yet another controversy affecting the general public.
After plenty of controversy has emerged over both the nation's homophobic and bigoted anti-gay laws as well as its safety concerns with terrorist threats, now the Olympic host city Sochi is under fire because of a large amount of stray dogs in the area that may be attacking tourists and others.
To make matters even worse, the country took yet another turn down the controversial road by hiring a company that may end up killing all of the stray dogs.
"A dog ran into the Fisht Stadium; we took it away," said Alexei Sorokin, who serves as the Director General of Basya Services, the company that is in the business of "catching and disposing" of dogs, according to The Associated Press in Sochi. "God forbid something like this happens at the actual opening ceremony. This will be a disgrace for the whole country." According to the AP in Sochi, the local dogs in Sochi are usually lured by construction sites because the workers give them food and shelter.
The amount of money that has been spent on the Olympics is through the roof and yet none of this is translating into much excitement and anticipation but rather disappointment. Russia has dropped the ball time and time again and many of the nation's representatives have been incredibly insensitive. Meanwhile, a man has already been arrested for waving a rainbow flag while dogs are getting poisoned.
Should Russia start showing more respect in the time leading up to the Olympics, especially considering that people are coming from different parts of the world and from different cultures? In the comments section below, let us know what you think.
