Elena's love triangle with the Salvadore brothers was a focal point in the first six seasons of "The Vampire Diaries." However, now that Nina Dobrev's beloved character is no longer the leading lady on the popular vampire drama, the show will have lots of room to explore romantic storylines involving other women in Season 7.

"Steroline" fans have a lot to look forward to when the series returns to The CW this fall as it looks like Stefan and Caroline will become the new "it" couple in Mystic Falls.

During an interview with TV Guide, actress Candice Accola opened up about Caroline's slow burning romance with Stefan.

"Six seasons is a nice long slow burn, so I'm excited to see these characters together," she said. "Usually it's so immediate, especially on our series... but in real life, it's the person you can be yourself in front of in the most dorky way. Both of these characters have seen the worst in each other and they still like each other and I think that's really cool and that's really special."

Accola also shut down any hope she will hook back up with vampire-warewolf hybrid Klaus Mikaelson, who now stars on the spinoff series "The Originals."

"I don't know if Caroline really wants [Klaus] back in Mystic Falls," said Accola at "The Vampire Diaries'" San Diego Comic-Con panel, according to TV Line. That makes sense since Klaus lives in a different city and just had a baby.

Executive producer Julie Plec also chimed in on Stefan and Caroline's budding romance, teasing that it will include "a lot of very unexpected twists and turns. The fun of this couple is that they're just getting cemented in their romantic status. As we left it off, he said, I will be here when you're ready.' She's trying really, really, really hard not to be ready," said Plec at Comic-Con. She added that there will be "shirtless stuff [in] every episode."

Accola also sat down with Buddy TV, revealing that viewers will find Caroline "still grieving the death of her mother and trying to get her own life together" when the new season kicks off.

Initially Caroline wants to maintain a friendship with Stefan, but "it will definitely be a little bit more challenging than Caroline anticipated to figure out what kind of 'ship she has with Stefan, whether it's a friendship or a relationship," Accola teased. "We're going to see her struggle with being able to play it cool."

In addition, Bonnie will also find love in Season 7. Not only is the witch going to be powerful, alive and in the present day this fall, but executive producer Caroline Dries told TVLine that Bonnie is "going to have her own love interest this year -- and it's not going to be Damon."

Actress Kat Graham admitted that she is not opposed if her character, Bonnie, hooks up with a romance with Damon to please fans. However, she says she'd actually love to see her character fall for another woman.

"I've pitched Bonnie having some discoveries, sexually, about herself," Graham says.

The Season 7 premiere of "The Vampire Diaries" will air on Thursday, Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
