There will be a lot to look forward to when the popular comedy series "The Big Bang Theory" kicks off Season 9 this September.

As fans may recall, the Season 8 finale ended with a major cliffhanger as Sheldon and Amy's slow-moving relationship seem to come to a shocking end. After dating for years, Amy told Sheldon that she was fed up and frustrated with the lack of growth in their relationship and needed space. Devastated by the breakup, Sheldon began talking to the Gollum figurine on his desk and pulled out an engagement ring he planned to give Amy.

Although many fans were stunned to see the couple actually break up, it was just as surprising to discover that Sheldon was planning to take his awkward relationship with Amy to the next level. Fortunately for viewers, the first episode of the new season will confirm when Sheldon was planning to propose and when he purchased the engagement ring.

While speaking to TVLine's Michael Ausiello at the 2015 San Diego Comic-Con earlier this month, showrunner Steve Molaro revealed that the season premiere will pick up shortly after the point where season 8 left off.

"We pick up a few hours after the eighth season finale," said the executive producer. "So, Leonard and Penny were heading to Vegas, and we're going to catch up with them right there."

Molaro also teased that Raj will face new challenges in his relationship with Emily.

"It's an interesting situation for [Raj and Emily] where he may find himself in a relationship with a person that might not be ideal for him. And I don't think that character has ever been in a place in his life where he might think of even breaking up with a girl. Probably a girl liking him is enough, and I think it'll be interesting for us to see how he navigates that as we move forward."

Season 9 of "The Big Bang Theory" will premiere on CBS on Sept. 21.
