2013 NFL Draft Predictions: San Francisco, Oakland, and San Diego
The NFL Draft gets underway tonight, and all 32 NFL teams are eager to see what hot new talent they will be able to pick up along the way. As always, there are sure to be a both future Hall of Famers and plenty of eventual busts that walk across the stage tonight, not to mention an array of surprising picks and trades as well.
Before the NFL Draft gets underway, we thought we'd take a look at the draft prospects for California's three NFL teams (one day Los Angeles, one day). Below we have compiled all of the draft information you need to now about your favorite West Coast teams and what to expect when they announce their selections tonight.
San Francisco 49ers
Number of Draft Picks: 13 (1st Round: 31st)
Team Needs: Defensive Line, Safety, Cornerback, Receiver
Overall: Many people expect the 49ers to move up in the draft and try to land a more sure-fire first round pick. Yahoo's Jason Cole says for fans to watch out for the team to pull off a trade and move up to pick Sheldon Richardson from Missouri. The team had some injuries to their defensive line and could use some more strength there. Tyrann Mathieu could be a really interesting third or even second round pick for the team as well.
Oakland Raiders
Number of Draft Picks: 7 (1st Round: 3rd)
Team Needs: Defensive Line, Offensive Line, Cornerback, Tight End
Overall: The Raiders had an abysmal pass rush last year, and with three of their four top pass rushers gone from that squad, they are in dire straits. With offensive tackles most likely going 1 and 2 (and 4 as well) in the draft, the Raiders should have their pick of defensive talent, which they desperately need. A lot of mock drafts have Florida defensive lineman Sharrif Floyd going to the Raiders here. A great 3rd or 4th round pick for the team could be defensive end William Gholston from Michigan State. He's a little raw, but is physically imposing (6-7, 275) with a lot of upside potential.
San Diego Chargers
Number of Draft Picks: 7
Team Needs: Offensive Line, Cornerback, Defensive Tackle
Overall: The Chargers are in desperate need of an offensive lineman, and ESPN's Todd McShay thinks he may know how they'll get one. McShay is predicting that the Chargers will trade up with the Raiders to get the third overall pick so that they can select the third offensive lineman. McShay thinks that will be Texass A&M's Luke Joeckel, but if the Chargers do move up, our money is on Lane Johnson out of Oklahoma. As for the second round, there are three cornerbacks that the Chargers should be ecstatic to pick up if available: Desmond Trufant, D.J. Hayden, and Jamar Taylor. If any of those are still on the board, the Chargers will take one.
