Sony is set to update its Xperia series smartphones with two new Xperia Z5 models. The two new phones will see improvements from the Xperia Z3+, according to Mobipicker.

Sony has been on a six-month release schedule, and the new Xperia Z5 models would compete with at least one new iPhone model.

The Sony Xperia Z5 and Xperia Z5 Compact are expected to be announced at the IFA 2015 in Berlin in September. A popular smartphone rumors site, Leaksfly, agrees with the September release date.

The Sony Xperia Z5 is expected to get a bump in screen size from 5.2 inches to 5.5 inches. The screen would display a resolution of 1,080 x 1,920 and 401 pixels per inch. The Xperia Z5 Compact would have a lower resolution of 720 x 1,280.

The processor inside the two new phones is expected to be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810, according to Phone Arena. This processor has run into problems on previous devices, including overheating. Sony might decide to use an updated version of the Snapdragon 810 that has already addressed these issues.

The Xperia Z5 will come with 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. There is hope that the Xperia Z5 will come with a microSD slot so that the internal storage can be expanded.

Cameras used for the Xperia Z5 are expected to be 20.7 megapixels (MP) on the back and 8 MP on the front.

Sony plans to use the new James Bond movie "Spectre" to heavily promote the Xperia Z5. Sony could wait to start selling the phone until the movie is released Nov. 6 in the U.S., or could use the movie to make it even more popular. Sony will definitely want to use the fall time period to promote this device because Apple and Samsung are both expected to make updates to their flagship phones.
