Spanish Shoe Designer Manolo Blahnik Debuts First Handbag Collection [Pic]
Most people think Manolo Blahnik and think shoes. The designer's iconic status in footwear grew thanks in part to Sarah Jessica Parker's Carrie Bradshaw character on "Sex in the City."
The Spanish designer is now adding handbags to the mix with his latest collection.
Blahnik announced that he would be releasing a collection of clutches inspired by evening wear. The collection will include one bag in honor of his iconic Hangisi shoe, which features satin fabric and a sparkling bejeweled buckle ornament.
Blahnik spoke to Vogue UK about the inspiration behind his newest fashion venture.
"I am always inspired by beautiful women from the past and present, so when I thought about doing a collection of bags, I was sure they were going to be evening bags for the women of today," he said. "I love ornaments in my shoes so why not add these to the bags too? These bags are an extension of some of the shoe styles I really like as I wanted to keep the connection between the shoes and bags."
The 2015 Fall/Winter collection features six clutches, all of which come in jewel-toned fabrics and are embellished with Swarovski jewels. Priced at almost $2,000, the clutches, perfect for a formal engagement, will require a hefty financial investment.
While discussing the new collection with Women's Wear Daily, Blahnik explained why he considers the handbags a necessary part of every woman's wardrobe.
"Every woman needs a jewel-something very special and beautiful," said Blahnik. "There is nothing more stunning than a feminine hand holding a gemlike object."
Can't get your hands on this collection? The designer has already spoken about his future collection plans, so there will definitely be other opportunities to own an original Blahnik handbag.
"This collection came up because it is something that I really wanted to do - I had no rush in getting this done," he said. "I like to make things beautifully and sometimes to get something right it takes time. At the moment I have no plans to make other accessories. For the moment I would like to enjoy the bags, and I am already thinking about more bags for next season!"
