Satanic Temple in Detroit Statue Unveiled: Monument Amidst Debates Over Church and State
A satanic organization in Detroit unveiled a large monument, a bronze Baphomet sculpture, last weekend. This follows a fight, that the group eventually lost, for the right to unveil the sculpture at a site in Oklahoma near a monument of the 10 Commandments,
The group responsible is opposed to having bible themed monuments on government land, according to The Huffington Post. It is using the new monument as a way to show Christian lawmakers that the separation of church and state, as well as the freedom of religion, works both ways.
The nine-foot tall monument weighs in at one ton, and the unveiling was kept a secret until the last possible moment to thwart any planned protests. The location of the monument was then emailed to group followers as the unveiling got underway.
Supporters chanted "Hail Satan" during the unveiling ceremony, for which there were hundreds in attendance. People rushed in to get photo ops with the monument, which depicts a creature that resembles a human body with the head of a goat. The figure also has wings and hooves. The statue also features a boy and a girl standing next to the creature, seemingly in awe of the Baphomet.
The Detroit chapter of the Satanic Temple had originally planned to move the monument to Arkansas, where Gov. Asa Hutchinson recently signed a bill that allows a monument of the 10 Commandments to stay on State Capitol grounds.
Although the Temple tried to keep protests away from the unveiling of the monument, about 50 local Christians still gathered to protest and prayed for the city, denouncing the monument. Among the protesters was Reverend Dave Bullock, a pastor at Greater St. Matthew Baptist Church in Highland Park, Michigan.
"The last thing we need in Detroit is having a welcome home party for evil," Bullock told Huff Post.
