In a press release Wednesday, MTV's Executive Vice President of Series Development and Head of Scripted Programming, Mina Lefevre, announced that "Scream" has already been renewed for a second season. This follows on the heels of an ever-expanding audience that has been tuning in weekly for their daily dose of murder and mystery.

According to Deadline, the series, which is a reimagining of the 1996 hit film by Wes Craven, premiered to modest numbers in the ratings. But it expanded its reach with an increase of over 60 percent; it has been picked up for a second season before the first season has even wrapped up.

The average audience in the 12 to 34 demographic was 687,000 in the beginning. That average has now grown to 997,000. That also includes a total of 1.563 million viewers for the premiere through all demographics.

Although this is not usual for a freshman series, it has happened in the past. The ratings for "Scream" have grown to 21 million viewers based off the data of Nielson Measurements.

The measurement company uses a "Live Plus 3" (L+3) model that basically measures the audience that watched the episode live as well as the audience that DVR'ed the show and watched it within three days of the live air.

"It has been a wonderful experience working with Bob Weinstein and his team who are such connoisseurs of this genre and we are thrilled by how our viewers have responded to the reinvention of 'Scream.' We look forward to another season filled with suspense, horror and more twists and turns." Lefevre said in the press release.

Co-chairman Bob Weinstein of The Weinstein Company also weighed in on the release.

"We couldn't be happier 'Scream' has been renewed for a second season and that we have a wonderful working relationship with Doug Herzog, Stephen Friedman, Susanne Daniels, Mina Lefevre and her team." Weinstein said.
