Confederate Flag Placed at Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, Activists Vow Not to Be Intimidated
Surveillance video captures two men placing confederate flags on the grounds of two of Atlanta's most distinguished African-American landmarks earlier this week.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports rabble-rousers left flags at the Ebenezer Baptist Church and at the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site.
While investigators were slow to speculate about a potential motive for the two unidentified offenders, church and civil leaders vowed not to be threatened or intimidated by such blatant acts of "terrorism." Perhaps hoping to round up suspects, police have since publicly released footage of the brazen act.
A maintenance man made the grisly discovery early Thursday, and quickly notified a federal park ranger who then called police. The flags were promptly removed and secured as evidence.
The incident was the latest in a simmering debate over the Confederate flag, largely stemming from the recent killing of nine black church worshippers, who were gunned down inside their Charleston, South Carolina sanctuary by white supremacist Dylann Roof during a bible study.
"To place the Confederate flags on the campus of Ebenezer Baptist Church -- after this horrific act in Charleston [and] in the wake of all that's happening in our country -- whatever the message was it clearly was not about heritage," said Ebenezer's pastor, the Rev. Raphael Warnock. "It was about hate."
Ebenezer was once presided over by Dr. King, who is entombed nearby with his widow, Coretta Scott King.
Atlanta police Chief George Turner hinted investigators have "good, strong physical evidence," including images of the perpetrators captured on the church's surveillance video system.
"We do have images of two white males placing those flags on the campus," he said. "We're trying to identify those folk right now."
One of the four flags left behind was placed under an encased poster that reads "BLACK LIVES MATTER, HANDS UP."
Meanwhile, Roof faces federal hate crime charges in the South Carolina shooting. The 21-year-old was recently named in a 33-count indictment that also includes a slew of firearm charges.
