In the increasingly dark third season of Showtime’s “Ray Donovan,” things have been going from bad to bleak.

Last week’s episode, “Come and Knock on Our Door,” had Ray (Liev Schreiber) drinking whiskey and seeing visions of his dead sister, letting viewers know that the tough guy might be losing his mind. The “fixer” is fixated on the terrors of his past and is lashing out at anyone that might be able to help him out of his mental state.

While Ray works through his problems, this week's upcoming episode also focuses on Paige Finney (Katie Holmes), the daughter of Donovan's scary boss Andrew Finney (Ian McShane). Holmes' portrayal of Paige is deeply complex. Her character is a sports agent, at once stylish and determined, who requires Ray's often brutal services.

In Episode 4 of Season 3, “Breakfast of Champions,” Ray uses his considerable powers of persuasion to put out some fires, while Paige tries to broker a better deal for herself.

In the teaser for the coming episode, Paige mistakenly tries to reason with Ray by appealing to his sense of humanity.

“My father is going to ask you to do cruel things to me. Do you even care about that?” she asks.

At which point Ray responds, “No. I work for your father. I don’t work for you.”

Speaking with ABC’s Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, the 36-year-old former “Dawson's Creek” star noted that the complexity of her character was detailed even in her dental work. Fans have been wondered about the braces she wears. As Holmes explains, “Literally, the braces are because she has migraine headaches and that helps them.

“I think it’s definitely to show that Paige, while she does look like she has everything in order, she still is flawed.”

“Ray Donovan” airs Sunday nights on Showtime.
