NFL News: New York Jets Defensive End Sheldon Richardson Arrested For Driving at 143 MPH, Resisting Arrest
New York Jets defensive end Sheldon Richardson was charged Thursday for resisting arrest and driving above the speed limit in an incident that occurred on July 14. Richardson was doing 143 MPH, to be exact.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Richardson, who has already been suspended for the first four games of the regular season in an unrelated episode, was a part of a late-night road race in O'Fallon, Missouri. According to court documents, Richardson was driving with a 12-year-old relative and two adult males. When the officer flashed his sirens, Richardson drove around stopped vehicles and turned off his lights with the officer chasing him.
Richardson later lost control of his 2014 Bentley Silver Spur on the Phoenix Parkway, crashing into oncoming traffic. The chase ended when he pulled into a driveway, where officials ordered Richardson and the passengers to get out of the car. Police reported finding a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the vehicle. It was later determined that Richardson owned the gun legally.
St. Charles Country Prosecutor Tim Lohmar stated that Richardson faces a misdemeanor, which carries a fine of $1,000 and a year in prison.
Earlier this year, Richardson was suspended for the first four games for the regular season by the NFL for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
When news was announced of his suspension, Richardson stated, "I'm very disappointed in myself ... I brought it on myself, me missing the four games, Just a little disappointed and embarrassed for my parents' sake."
It is likely that Commissioner Roger Goodell will suspend Richardson for additional games following this latest incident.
Richardson is one of the top defensive players in the league and was a first-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Last season he registered 8 sacks with 66 combined tackles.
