One Direction Drops First Single ‘Drag Me Down’ Since Zayn Malik Departure [Listen]
The four members of the boy band One Direction proved their sound and style hasn't changed since the departure of bandmate Zayn Malik by releasing their new single "Drag Me Down" on Friday.
The popular music group, who recently celebrated its fifth anniversary and roughly 65 million career record sales, is currently in the studio creating a fifth album due for release in November. "Drag Me Down" is the album's first released track.
Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson surprised fans by releasing the track to iTunes and Spotify in the early morning hours on Friday. The British superstars alerted their followers of the song's debut on Twitter.
"Finally we get to say this! have waited a long time but our new single 'Drag Me Down' is out!!!" Horan wrote on Twitter, later adding, "Wowwww! The reaction to drag me down worldwide has been insane, didn't expect this! Thank you all so much."
The "The X Factor" alums croon about love as a funky beat plays in the background in the new single.
"All my life you stood by me when no one else was ever behind me / All these lights that can't blind me / With your love, nobody can drag me down / All my life you stood by me when no one else was ever behind me / All these lights that can't blind me / With your love, nobody can drag me down," the four member band sings.
The new single was released one day after Malik signed a record deal with RCA. The singer took to Twitter on Thursday to tell fans about the agreement, writing, "I guess I never explained why I left, it was for this moment to be given the opportunity to show you who i really am! #realmusic #RCA!!"
One Direction confirmed Malik's exit in March, following his bail out on the band's tour to reportedly deal with "stress" after allegations that he cheated on his fiancée. Rumors surfaced in April that his absence wasn't due to stress -- Malik wanted to leave the group to start a solo career.
