"Final Fantasy" Distant Worlds conductor Arnie Roth reportedly told an audience at its symphony concert in Pittsburgh on Saturday evening that a "Final Fantasy 12" "remake" is in progress.

A discussion on the Neogaf forum seemed to suggest that Square Enix may be cooking up something special for fans of the franchise.

"FF12" is only playable on PlayStation 2 as of the moment. It is also the only entry in the series that is yet to be released for newer gaming consoles.

It can be recalled that "FF12" was delayed several times. In fact, it held a Guinness World Record for longest development period, according to IGN.

Chief creative developer Yasumi Matsuno was purportedly sick mid-way through the project and had to resign. Also, Square Enix had conceded that most of the original concepts of the game had to be dropped.

Remake or remaster?

As for Roth's tip, many guessed he meant to say "remaster" instead of "remake." His statements also brought more questions than answers.

Game Rant wondered if the next offing will only involve "Final Fantasy 12" and "Final Fantasy 12: Revenant Wings."

Square Enix to make announcement soon?

"Final Fantasy 12" has received a fair share of positive and negative feedback. It is often considered as one of the best and also one of the worst games in the series yet it seems most "Final Fantasy" fans are anticipating the new "FF7" remake instead. Knowing that it would still be a couple of years away, a possible remastered "FF12" would keep incumbent and potentially new PlayStation and Xbox gamers busy for the time being.

Roth's comments should be taken with a grain of salt since Square Enix has yet to clarify on the issue.

What is clear, though, is that Square Enix will be at the week-long Gamescom starting Aug. 5. They will be hosting a variety of "Final Fantasy 15" activities.

If they plan to launch a remastered "FF12," Gamescom will be the right forum to announce it.
