Russian media has reported that the Russian pop duo t.A.Tu, who gained worldwide fame in the mid-2000s will be reuniting to perform at the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games' opening ceremony on February 7.

The group made up of Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova will be singing their biggest hit, "Not Gonna Get Us," as the Russian Olympic team enters the venue, says the Hollywood Reporter.

In the Russian language, their name translates to "this girl loves that girl," and are known to incorporate very sensual girl-on-girl actions in their performances as well as their lyrics, recounts E! Online.

The news comes as a surprise given the very strict policy of the country adopted last year prohibiting and criminalizing the practice of "gay propaganda."

t.A.T.u was created in 1999 by producer Ivan Shapovalov who selected both girls then aged 14 and 15 and became popular after the release of the video of two singers as lesbian school girls in 2002. In their song "All the Things She Said," the then-teen pair kissed each other in the rain behind prison bars. However, it later surfaced that neither Lena or Yulia are gay and the pair split in 2009 and have not released a studio album since then.  

Hollywood reporter writes that a number of Russian media outlets reprinted Katina's earlier Twitter post, in which she complained about treatment on the part of the Olympic organizers. "They have invited us to perform at the opening ceremony of the Sochi Olympics, but they're treating the artists like shit!!!" said the post, which was later deleted. "The organization is horrible."

According to the Moscow Times, the pair appeared at the 2007 Moscow gay pride parade and just last year Katina told The Daily Beast last year that she likened the music video performance to a role in a movie. She added that she thought the recent law was "weird" as "a lot of people from the government with the big positions are gay."
