'The Blacklist' Season 3 Spoilers: James Spader Says Season 3 'Throws Everything Up in the Air'
“The Blacklist,” already noted for two dark seasons, will return to NBC this fall with a considerably bleaker outlook.
The summary for Episode 1 of Season 3, “The Troll Farmer,” according to IMDB, is as follows: "A desk-bound CIA analyst volunteers to go undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent diabolical global disaster."
The heroic actions of this new character are no doubt shaped by the fact that someone needs to pick up the good guy slack now that Liz Keen (Megan Boone) disappeared with Ray Reddington (James Spader) at the end of Season 2. Megan Boone, speaking with Zap2it back in May, said when “The Blacklist” comes back, it is “going to be the same characters but a different show, a very different dynamic.” And this will be due to a storyline that has Liz Keen "no longer working within the law.”
The character of Liz, who has been controlled for so long, seems to be turning toward a skeptical survivor point of view, akin to that espoused by her unofficial mentor Reddington.
Now officially on the FBI’s Most Wanted List, Liz is embracing the unknown. And Boone feels confident that, whatever the shake up to the series will be, this new darker action is where the show needs to go, saying, “With 22 episodes a year, it does benefit the show to have some kind of a formula … but we are going to sort of break open a lot of the structure of the show.”
In a new promo for the upcoming season, James Spader said, "Season 3 could conceivably start the same day as the end of Season 2.
"It sort of throws all the pieces up in the air," said the actor before laughing with his trademark mixture of nonchalance and menace.
“The Blacklist” returns to NBC in September.
