Cinnamon Powder Death: 4-Year-Old Boy Dies After Inhaling, Kentucky Mother Uses Tragedy as a Warning
A Kentucky mother is using her young son's tragic death to spread awareness about the dangers of Cinnamon powder consumption.
Back in 2011, a number of Internet users began participating in a viral craze called "The Cinnamon Challenge" by filming themselves while they attempted to consume a spoonful of cinnamon powder without drinking a liquid. Although many people have participated in the prank, Brianna Radar said that the results can be deadly.
The Madison County mother said she witnessed her 4-year-old son, Matthew, choke and die after he accidentally swallowed too much cinnamon. According to Radar, Matthew climbed on top of her kitchen counter one morning in June and put a bottle of cinnamon in his mouth.
"He started choking, it was like he was having a seizure and just collapsed," she told NBC affiliate Lex18.
Matthew was rushed to the Baptist Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead 90 minutes later. The coroner says cinnamon can cause asphyxiation when inhaled.
She added that her son "was completely healthy -- no problems."
Now, Radar is sharing her story to warn others about the dangers of cinnamon, especially those who partake in "The Cinnamon Challenge."
She wants "to let people know cinnamon can kill," she said. "All these kids, they don't think about the fact it can hurt them."
According to doctors, the challenge can be dangerous. Particles of cinnamon can be inhaled through the windpipe and into the lungs. This can cause inflammation and even choking.
She also shared her story in a Facebook post, according to WTXF, writing, "I can't express how grateful I am for all the amazing support we have right now. And each and every one of you are amazing."
"Matty man's story made the Lex 18 news and now CNN wants to share it nationwide. That helps ease my breaking heart just a little to think that just maybe my baby's story can save even just one child's life."
"My Matty was definitely loved by many and he loved everyone. Fly high baby boy we love you more than words could ever explain. And we miss you so much it hurts. R.I.P my sweet little angel."
