Sochi Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony: Performances Begin Amid Terrorist Threats and Gay Rights Issues
The opening ceremonies for the most expensive Olympic Games in history will start up this Friday in the tiny Russian town of Sochi and the entire planet will be watching and tuning in for the event. Viewers from all over will be watching the wondrous activities and introduction of the Olympic athletes which marks the official start of the 2014 Winter Olympics. There will be music and shows of light all across the open air, and quite a bit of it.
Konstantin Ernst, the creative producer for the opening ceremony had this to say: "Most of the ceremony focuses heavily on Russian classical music. Unfortunately, unlike London, we cannot boast a plethora of famous world-known pop performers. This is why we are now focusing on what Russia is best known for musically around the world; namely, classical music."
Despite the fear of terrorist attacks, poor preparations and the ever looming controversy of gay rights, Russian officials have kept their stance that the places in Sochi are indeed safe. The head of the games, Dmitry Cherynshenko said that this resort village will be "the safest place on Earth during the Olympics." The president of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who was mostly behind the proposal to the International Olympic Committee to have his country be a host country, will be attending the games. Ersnt said, speaking of Mr. Putin, "The head of state is expected to declare the Games open during the ceremony. It is a requirement. And naturally, Mr. Putin will be doing just that."
The opening ceremony, which is the only event that will be scheduled for Friday, will last about two and a half hours. "We believe this is going to be a respectable format. It will be very comfortable for the spectators," Ernst said. There will be close to or over 40,000 individuals in attendance at Fisht Olympic Stadium viewing from the stands. The classical music composer Anna Netrebko will peform the well known Olympic anthem.
