New York Knicks Rumors: Should Knicks Sign NBA Free Agents Carlos Boozer, Glen Davis?
The New York Knicks had their worst season in franchise history last year. With a 17-65 record, the Knicks had the worst record in the Eastern Conference last season. Phil Jackson, who ironically played on the 1973 Knicks championship team, is making big changes to the roster.
After being involved in free agent rumors with Kevin Séraphin, the Knicks eventually agreed to a deal with him. The Knicks and Séraphin agreed to a one year $2.8 million deal. This short term deal comes as a surprise to many considering Séraphin is only 25 years old.
The Knicks had huge rebounding issues last season. As a team, the Kicks ranked 29th overall in total rebounds, 29th in defensive rebounding, and 28th in rebounding differential. Patrick Ewing and Charles Oakley aren't walking through Madison Square Garden any time soon. The Knicks need rebounding help, and they could look at free agency.
Carlos Boozer is currently an unrestricted free agent after spending last season with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Boozer obviously isn't an elite scorer, and his offense doesn't exactly resemble Tim Duncan, but he still brings value. Boozer has always been a quality rebounder averaging 9.5 boards per game throughout his 13-year career. Even last season on a dismal Lakers squad, Boozer still averaged 10.3 rebounds per 36 minutes.
The Knicks did sign center Robin Lopez to a four deal this offseason, but much work is still yet to be done. Despite standing seven feet tall, Lopez only averages five rebounds per game in his career. Boozer is also a quality free throw shooter who makes more than 72 percent of his shots from the line. It's unlikely the Knicks will sign Boozer at this point given the fact that they've already brought in Séraphin, but Jackson has shown interest in him. Last offseason the Knicks almost made a trade for Boozer.
Aside from Boozer, Glen Davis is also an unrestricted free agent.
"Big Baby" Davis is a quality player who can help make a difference for any roster. Davis is just 29 years old and can bring a big body to the paint area. Davis spent the last two seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers starting just one game. That's not very surprising considering the fact that they already have DeAndre Jordan and Blake Griffin up front.
Davis helped the Boston Celtics win an NBA Championship filling in for Kevin Garnett on a routine basis. Davis is a very good teammate to have because he knows his role, and he has no issue coming off the bench to better help the team. He's not going to average a lot of points, but Davis has made a lot of clutch shots in the postseason
Davis has said this offseason that he is open to playing overseas.
Tristan Thompson is a restricted free agent, and he will more than likely be playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers next season. Even if the Knicks made a big offer, the Cavaliers would match it.
