Fans of Sheldon and Amy's awkward romance on the "The Big Bang Theory" may be disappointed when Season 9 premieres in September since it looks like Amy will stick to her decision to take a break from Sheldon.

Season 8 of the popular CBS comedy finale ended with a major cliffhanger as Sheldon and Amy's slow-moving relationship seem to come to a shocking halt. After dating for years and feeling disrespected and neglected, Amy told Sheldon that she was fed up with the lack of growth in their relationship and needed space. Devastated by the breakup, Sheldon began talking to the Gollum figurine on his desk and pulled out an engagement ring he apparently planned to give Amy.

Although many fans are routing for Sheldon and Amy to get back together, executive producer Steve Molaro revealed to Entertainment Weekly that Amy will stick to her guns.

"Right now, she really wants to take a step back and think about where she is, where they are and how she wants to move forward in her life," said the EP. "I don't think she's necessarily in a rush to find another man, but I don't think she's ruling it out either."

Meanwhile, new spoilers hint that there's hope Penny and Leonard may actually make it down the aisle.

Before Season 8 ended, Penny and Leonard agreed to elope in Las Vegas. While driving to the City of Sin, Leonard began having second thoughts about their plans and confessed to Penny that he had kissed another woman years ago when he was drunk. Penny assumed that he told her this in order to sabotage their plans to elope, but Leonard assured her that he's totally committed to the idea, and they agree to go through with it.

According to TVLine, the show is casting a male actor in his 50s to play a minister in the Season 9 premiere. This may indicate that the couple may get to the chapel.

This news also aligns with the spoiler Molaro dropped at Comic-Con, telling TVLine, that the show will "pick up a few hours after the Season 8 finale. Leonard and Penny were headed to Vegas, and we're going to catch up with them right there."

Season 9 of "The Big Bang Theory" will premiere on CBS on Sept. 21.
