The New York Yankees took a 2-1 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night at the Yankee Stadium, but pitching prospect Luis Severino turned heads in his debut.

Severino, who became the youngest pitcher to start this season at 21 years and 166 days old, displayed poise and control in five innings. He allowed two runs and two hits, but struck out seven hitters with no walks.

The hits were crucial, though, as it allowed the Red Sox to run away with the victory. But overall, Severino, who had a 1.80 ERA in his debut, impressed their coaching staff, including manager John Farrell, who said that the 21-year-old will have a bright future in New York.

"We don't leave New York without David probably going deep one time. He just put a beautiful swing on the pitch," Farrell said via ESPN. "But there's no question we'll see Severino a lot in years to come, and that's a good-looking young pitcher."

Even Red Sox veteran David Ortiz had nothing but praises for Severino even if the young pitcher allowed him to hit a crucial home run in the fourth inning, which gave Boston a 2-0 lead.

"That young kid, he's got good stuff, man. I think he's going to be pretty good," Ortiz said of Severino. "I think at the end of the game he was missing location a little bit, but other than that, his stuff is very explosive."

Severino's counterpart, Steven Wright, also had an impressive night on Wednesday, as he stopped the surging Yankees on their tracks.

The Yankees have been on a hot streak, as they have scored 90 runs and 21 homeruns in their last 10 games, but Wright allowed just four hits, including the homer from Carlos Beltran in the seventh inning.

But despite absorbing their 46th loss of the season, the Yankees are still on top of the American League East standings. They are still 4.5 games ahead of the Toronto Blue Jays, who scored a 9-7 win over the Minnesota Twins on Wednesday, and 5.5 games ahead of the Baltimore Orioles, who also took a 7-3 win over the Oakland Athletics.
