MMA News & Notes: CM Punk Not in a Hurry, But Former WWE Champion Eager to Make UFC Debut [Video]
Former World Wrestling Entertainment champion CM Punk is taking his time preparing for his UFC debut, but he insisted that he is very eager to fight inside the Octagon for the first time.
CM Punk, who left WWE to sign with UFC in December last year, told Fox Sports he knows mixed martial arts fans and his wrestling followers are excited to see him fight in the Octagon.
ESPN reported last month that CM Punk, who is known as Phil Brooks in real life, could fight at UFC 194 in December on pay-per-view. When asked to give a timetable for his debut, CM Punk declined to give specific details but said that he does not want to wait too long.
"With all this press and talk, eventually they want me to fight," CM Punk said. "They're filming the journey. They probably have enough film for a few episodes on FOX now."
But while he is excited to fight in front of UFC fans, CM Punk said that he will not rush his debut because he wants to make sure he is 100 percent prepared.
"I'm not in a hurry," CM Punk added. "I want to make sure I'm prepared. I'm getting in a cage to fight another human being. I need to make sure I'm prepared to win."
The 36-year-old is looking to become the next former WWE superstar to make his mark in mixed martial arts like Brock Lesnar, who made his UFC debut in February 2008 and won the heavyweight title in November 2008 after knocking out Randy Couture at UFC 91.
CM Punk admitted that the transition is harder than what he is expected, but he is now having more time for training after moving to a new house, which is closer to the gym where he is working out. He was previously travelling from Chicago to train, but has found a new home in Milwaukee, which is just five minutes away from the gym.
The former WWE star said that the hardest part is balancing all the skills and techniques he needs in order to succeed, but his wife, former WWE Divas champion AJ Lee, is making the transition easier for him.
"I knew what I was getting into," CM Punk said. "The hardest thing is balancing everything -- jiu-jitsu, boxing, wrestling, Muay Thai, my wife, my dog. Luckily my wife has been great. She loves Milwaukee now."
