New Horror Film ‘Pay The Ghosts’ Gets Simultaneous Theatrical and VOD Release [Watch]
What makes a horror movie so scary is not just when people die, but when young children fall victim to monsters. That is the case with the upcoming film "Pay The Ghost," which is slated to debut simultaneously in theaters and video on demand (VOD), according to Deadline.
This is a unique for of distribution that rarely happens, but the world is moving closer to it. The simultaneous release for the film will happen on Sept. 23, and the film, which stars Nicolas Cage and Sarah Wayne Callies, will find itself on two different media. This could also be great for the production company. If the film quickly gains a cult following, fans could stream it, then go out and experience it in theaters.
Although the move is experimental to see how fans respond, it is a bold move by the production company and theater owners alike.
The film, according to another article on Deadline, is about a university professor (Cage) whose young son goes missing following a Halloween parade. In the film, a year has passed since the boy's disappearance and now, the professor and wife Kristen (Callies) are estranged due to the overwhelming stress of loss.
At that point, a year later, Cage starts sensing his son's presence, which leads him to enlist his wife's help in finding him. This leads them to an ominous legend that plagues the town. There is a presence in the town that seems to come and strike every Halloween by abducting children.
Kristen is an environmental attorney in the film and her instincts, combined with intelligence, lend greatly to their mission to find their son.
Callies is no stranger to the horror genre, having done three seasons on AMC's mega-hit series "The Walking Dead."
Cage is also a seasoned veteran in the genre, with credits to his name such as "Ghost Rider" and "The Wicker Man."
