FX’s ‘The Strain’ Renewed for Third Season
In not so unusual news for a cable TV show that performs well and happens to fit a trending genre, FX has officially green lit "The Strain" for a third season, only four weeks into the sophomore run for the show.
According to Deadline, the hit horror show, which features a pre-apocalyptic theme with vampires, has been performing very well among the key demographic, despite seeing an overall ratings slide.
The genre itself has seen enormous ratings on cable networks across the board. AMC's "The Walking Dead" is the No. 1 show on television among adults age 18 to 49. "The Last Ship" on TNT, a plague driven post-apocalyptic show, has also seen outstanding numbers for its weekly episodes.
For horror itself, The CW has capitalized with 11 seasons of "Supernatural" and other shows like "The Vampire Diaries" and "The Originals."
"The Strain" moves away from the young adult audience and packs in a procedural punch, combining science with mythology. The vampires on this show are quite different than those of legend or in popular fiction. They are somewhat mindless, given that they are solely controlled telepathically by a "Master." But they are also capable of cognitive thought when not under his influence.
In the second season of the show, society is in the beginning stages of the end. The fall of society is coming to fruition as the infections start to rage out of control. Dr. Ephraim Goodweather (Corey Stoll) along with Dr. Nora Martinez (Mia Maestro) are working tirelessly on a biological weapon to use against the vampires, or the "strigoi," as the series calls them.
Meanwhile, Abraham Setrakian (David Bradley) is vying to use the weapons of legend and attempting to locate an ancient book that will help them destroy all of the strigoi.
The series takes place through the expanded views of several characters who have risen up and vowed to fight against the vampires.
