Entering the fierce smartphone arena is already a difficult task, especially for a no-name startup. However, the employees at Nextbit come from big companies like Google and HTC, and they plan to release their own smartphone.

The startup company Nextbit was originally a software startup, but now they are going into hardware and plan to release a smartphone that would compete with the likes of Apple, Samsung and LG, CNET reports. Nextbit has backing from Google Ventures and has former Android employees Tom Moss and Mike Chan and former HTC design chief Scott Croyle on its staff. Nextbit plans to release their smartphone on Sept. 1.

"It's going to be friggin' awesome," Moss, the chief executive of Nextbit said.

Nextbit is hoping to have better luck than Microsoft and Samsung had recently. Microsoft is downsizing its mobile phones division and Samsung is seeing its profits from smartphones decline. Nextbit hopes to compete in this difficult market with its knowledge of Android and HTC design experience.

"Phone fatigue is a real thing," Moss said. "That's why we're doing something different."

Moss would not confirm a price on the new Nextbit smartphone, but he did say it would fall in the "premium tier" of smartphones, or between $300 and $400. 

Nextbit says its smartphone will get better as time goes on. They plan to do this by constantly updating the Android operating system. Nextbit will also take advantage of cloud-based storage so owners of the smartphone can have as many apps, songs and files as they wish.

The Nextbit team won't completely alter the Android operating system, instead they will "supercharge" it. 

Nextbit will use Croyle's expertise to release an attractive smartphone. Croyle was one of the key figures responsible for the metal-bodied HTC One and HTC One M9.

There is plenty of competition in the smartphone market, and Nextbit will have to find a way to stand out. 

"We're trying to push the boundaries," Moss said. 

Android and Me expects the Nextbit smartphone to be very comparable in look and feel to the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the HTC One M9.
