Hillary Clinton on Donald Trump: Visit to Trump Wedding Not Linked to Tycoon's Donations
Hillary Clinton attended Donald Trump's latest wedding, not because she felt obliged to the real estate mogul and presidential candidate, but simply because she thought it would be "fun," she told reporters on Monday.
"I didn't know him that well" ahead of the 2005 nuptials in Palm Beach, Florida, the former secretary of state insisted. "I mean, I knew him. I knew him and I happened to be planning to be in Florida and I thought it'd be fun to go to his wedding, because it's always entertaining."
At last Thursday's GOP debate, Trump had commented on the presence of Hillary and former President Bill Clinton and linked it to his past donations to the political power couple's foundation, according to the Hill. "With Hillary Clinton, I said, 'Be at my wedding.' And she came to my wedding. You know why? She had no choice because I gave," the "Apprentice" star charged.
On Monday, Trump attempted to clarify his remarks, after Clinton's campaign spokeswoman Jennifer Palmieri said that the former first lady's feelings had been hurt by the tycoon's apparent lack of appreciation for her mere "company," the Daily Mail noted.
"I said it as a joke, he told NBC's Today Show about his Clinton comments. "I was joking when I said that. [The Clintons] both came to my wedding, and that was very nice."
Meanwhile, criticism from some of his challengers for the 2016 Republican nomination prompted Trump to justify his donations to the Clinton Foundation, which amounted to at least $100,000, The Hill detailed.
"I gave to a foundation that, frankly, that foundation is supposed to do good," he said. "I didn't know that her money would be used on private jets going all over the world."
"You know, most of the people on this stage I've given to, just so you understand," Trump added in reference to the other GOP hopefuls participating in the presidential debate.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson, meanwhile, used the light moment to invite Trump to contribute to their respective campaigns.
