Fans of ABC’s hit political thriller “Scandal” are perhaps used to their expectations being crushed. But one thing that the promos for Season 5 seem to promise is that romance will be a huge factor when the show returns this fall.

Season 4 ended with Olivia (Kerry Washington) and President Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) making out in the White House, unafraid of their future. Speaking to Extra about the coming season, Washington seemed to be pretty happy with how things were going for her character, saying that the show “will be worth the wait.”

“The first episode back is pretty special,” she said, adding that it was not what she expected.
When asked by her interviewer about Olivia’s personality, the actress said, “I think she is really fearless in a way that I have tried to borrow.”

The show's creator Shonda Rhimes recently dished about what kind of world was in store for her "Scandal" characters. As reported by Deadline, she said, the show was “picking up almost where we left off.”

“That was a pretty harrowing place where the world had been blown apart for everybody except for Olivia and Fitz," explained Rhimes. Elaborating on the "harrowing" situation, she said, “Mellie wasn’t living in the White House because Fitz kicked her out. Jake said he was walking away. Quinn was thinking about killing Huck. Things weren’t going so well for people, and we pick up right there in that environment.”

Speaking with ET as Season 4 came to its close, Goldwyn admitted that the relationship between his character and Olivia was "dysfunctional."

"We both behave really badly a lot of the time," he said, adding that Rhimes “has a way of just reeling you back in, you know. We're terrible to each other. but, you know, you can't help it."

Season 5 of “Scandal” airs Sept. 24 on ABC.
