Although many Republicans have banded together in a renewed effort to shut down Planned Parenthood, 2016 Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump took a surprising stance and defended the women's health organization on Tuesday.

Planned Parenthood has been under fire since a right-wing anti-abortion group released videos that allegedly show medical workers affliated with the pro-choice nonprofit discussing the sale of aborted fetal tissue. Following the release of undercover sting videos, a group of GOP senators tried to pass a bill to strip the group of its federal funding, but failed to get enough votes. Other Republicans, including 2016 presidential hopeful Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, have even called for a government shutdown in order to defund Planned Parenthood, reports The Huffington Post.

However, during an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday night, Trump decided to go against the grain, stating that Planned Parenthood helps women in many different ways outside of giving women abortions.

"Let's say there is two Planned Parenthoods in a way. You have it as an abortion clinic. Now that's actually a fairly small part of what they do," said the GOP frontrunner, noting that he is "totally against" abortions.

"They also however service women," Trump told Hannity. "We have to help women. We have to look at the positives, also, for Planned Parenthood."

Hannity asked the reality TV star if the federal government should fund groups that perform abortions, even if taxpayer dollars are not directly used to fund those procedures.

"Maybe unless they stop with the abortions, we don't do the funding for the stuff that we want," Trump said in response. "There are many ways you can do that, because I'm totally against the abortion aspect at Planned Parenthood, but I've had many women, I've had many Republican conservative women come up and say Planned Parenthood serves a good function other than that one aspect."

According to TPM, earlier this year the real estate mogul said he supported congressional Republicans' efforts to defund Planned Parenthood. However, Trump changed his tune during a Tuesday morning interview on CNN where he said he would have to reconsider cutting funding fo the group since it offers other services for women.
