Sochi Winter Olympics Weather Update: Course Turns to Slush as Snow Guns Fail; Were Shaun White's Complaints Valid?
Athletes at Summer Olympics are used to warm temperatures, views of sunbathers and carnival-like entertainment in the streets, however, this year at the 2014 Winter Games, the Winter Olympic athletes are finally getting a chance to experience that. On Monday, the temperature reached 61 degrees in the Olympic Village of Sochi.
Sochi, which is located on the far southwestern corner of Russia, is a city known for being a resort town with its subtropical climates. Sochi was once home to Joseph Stalin's beach residence. The warm weather that is blanketing the Olympic village is creating challenges for the Olympic Game organizers and athletes. Organizers are finding it difficult to keep their snow and ice from melting.
Needing to constantly use the snow guns in their possession to try to keep textures optimal for athletes, athletes are upset and defeated as they have had training runs canceled and games changed from during the day into the evening. Athletes have complained that they do not have the proper equipment to ski on the Sochi games "Mountain Cluster" as it has turned into slush. Numerous athletes have fallen while skiing down the softened course, costing them a victory and the medal.
The same is true in snowboard events, where many athletes, including American Shaun White, complained about the vertical grade of the walls and the flat bottom of the pipe, and that weather was ruining the snow. However, some athletes like Danny Davis were critical of those complaints, saying, "You ride in the elements. I grew up in Michigan. I grew up with ice ... and all kinds of garbage," adding that "You're used to it. Toughen up, man."
The warm climate is not only challenging for the outdoor events that are being baked by the sun, but indoor events are suffering from the consequences as well. Olympic organizers have stated that the ice inside event arenas is quickly melting and needing to be replaced on a regular basis. Sochi has spent the past years leading up to the winter games gathering an estimated 710,000 cubic meters of snow which has been stored in insulated silos. Sochi is not the first host city that has had to bring snow into the Winter Games venue. Vancouver had to do the same for the 2010 Games.
