‘Reign’ Season 3 Spoilers: Nostradamus Returns to French Court, How Will Catherine de Medici React?
"Reign" showrunner Laurie McCarthy revealed to Entertainment Weekly on Friday that the character Nostradamus (Rossif Sutherland) will return for Season 3, but he will appear only in a few episodes.
"He will be in the series intermittently, but he's still really pissed at Catherine, so I don't think he really feels a great desire to be under her thumb again," McCarthy said.
The bad blood between Catherine de Medici (Megan Follows) and Nostradamus started in the Season 2 episode "The Plague" when he helped Mary Stuart (Adelaide Kane) drug Catherine to make her believe she had the plague so she would not assassinate an enemy of nobleman Lord Eduard (Kerr Hewitt). Lord Eduard, the son of Lord Narcisse (Craig Parker), ended up poisoning his foe's entire household. Furious, Mary locked Eduard in a mass holding cell with plague-infected people.
It wasn't until the next Season 2 episode "Drawn and Quartered" that Catherine discovered Nostradamus had plotted with Mary to drug her. Catherine viewed his scheme with Mary as a betrayal. Nostradamus was sent to the dungeon where Catherine told him that had he remained loyal to her instead of Mary, he'd not be in prison with his life on the line. He threatened Catherine that if she thinks her sins will stay buried, she is wrong.
Later in the same episode, unknown to Catherine, Mary helped Nostradamus escape.
It's important to remember that in Season 1 episode 1, Nostradamus told Catherine of his vision that marriage to Mary will cost her son, Prince Francis (Toby Regbo), his life. The two conspired to have Lola's (Anna Popplewell) lover, Colin (Ashley Charles), rape Mary to steal her virtue and make her unfit to wed Francis.
The dynamics between Nostradamus, Catherine and Mary are wrought with drama and betrayal. It will be interesting to see what secrets are exposed and what transpires between the three characters in Season 3.
Nostradamus' return as "a visitor to court," according to McCarthy, could mean a reconciliation with Catherine. Or will the apothecary and seer reveal those sins he warned Catherine about?
McCarthy would not dish on when Nostradamus will appear, for how long or under what circumstances.
"Reign" returns Friday, Oct. 9 at 8 p.m. EDT on The CW.
