New York Yankees pitcher was hit by a line drive to the face during the second inning of their 8-7 victory over the Minnesota Twins on Monday night at Yankee Stadium.

Eduardo Nunez's hit went straight to Mitchell's face before the starting pitcher was able to put his glove up. The 24-year-old immediately went down to the mound with a bloodied nose.

"It was really, really scary," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said via ESPN. "It seems like your heart just drops into your stomach, and you are scared for the kid. You see blood coming out. I was really worried."

Mitchell was sent to the New York-Presbyterian Hospital for evaluation. According to the ESPN report, the right hander sustained a nasal fracture. He is expected to be placed on the disabled list, as team doctors will continue to evaluate him for concussion.

Mitchell became the fourth player hit by line drives this year, which fuelled talks about wearing caps with protective materials to avoid similar incidents in the future.

"I know they've talked about trying to find that protective cap for pitchers," Twins manager Paul Molitor said. "They haven't come up with anything that looks very practical as of yet. The face is pretty much something that's going to be unprotected, no matter what you do."

Yankees Keep AL East Lead

Despite losing Mitchell, the Yankees managed to escape with an 8-7 victory in 10 innings against the Twins to keep their slim lead in the American League East standings.

The Twins looked on their way to winning the match after taking a 7-5 lead, but Carlos Beltran hit a two-run homer to tie the game in the sixth inning. The game went to a 10th inning and Headley sealed the win for the Yankees, as he hit a grounder with bases loaded, to give the Yankees their 65th win of the season.

The win helped the Yankees take a one-game advantage over the 65-54 Toronto Blue Jays in the race for the AL East Division title. The Yankees will host the Twins again on Tuesday and will lean on starting pitcher CC Sabathia, who was recently involved in an altercation in Toronto.
