On Aug. 20, Android 5.1 Lollipop will be seeding its way to the HTC One M9.

HTC's vice president for product management Mo Versi recently confirmed on Twitter that Verizon has approved of the update.

Verizon's decision came in the wake of the "Stagefright" vulnerability scare that is currently sweeping the Android world by storm.

''Stagefright" was first discovered by Joshua Drake from Zimperium Research Labs last April.

"Attackers only need your mobile number, using which they can remotely execute code via a specially crafted media file delivered via MMS. A fully weaponized successful attack could even delete the message before you see it. You will only see the notification. These vulnerabilities are extremely dangerous because they do not require that the victim take any action to be exploited," Ziperium said in its blog post.

The researching company mentioned that the "Stagefright" exploit potentially exposes 95 percent of Android devices, approximately 950 Million devices, to this vulnerability as it affects devices running on Android 2.2. Devices that are running on OS older than Jelly Bean have the highest exploitation risk since software updates for these OS versions are scarce.

The malicious MMS messages don't even have to be opened by users for hackers to infiltrate their devices. The hacker could easily have access to the infected devices' microphone, camera, and other phone data.

Luckily for disgruntled HTC One M9 users, HTC and Verizon were generous enough to add the "Stagefright" vulnerability patch to the Android 5.1 Lollipop update.

The update comes with new animations for Quick Settings as well as added security features for when the smartphone gets stolen. Now, factory reset is impossible unless original owners log in to their Google Accounts. 4G LTE bands 3 and 7 have also been opened for roaming.

"Remember, these updates don't always show up right away. They are gradually rolled out to all users, so you may not see the notification show up immediately. You could jump into the settings and check for upgrades from time to time, but just try not to smash your screen checking every minute," Android Authority reminded.
