The top executives from Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronics Co. have met in the United States (U.S.) for a possible agreement in their patent infringement lawsuits. The result of the meeting was a failure.

According to ZDNet Korea, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook and Samsung's CEO JK Shin followed mitigation orders issued by a San Jose, Calif. court, which stated both companies reach an agreement by Feb. 19.

A Samsung spokesperson, however, stated, "we can't confirm whether the two CEO met, or if they did, what the results were."

According to a court filing on Jan. 8, Apple and Samsung agreed to attend the mediation session. The agreement for the mediation session came as both legal teams met on Jan. 6 with the intent to "discuss settlement opportunities."

Korea's Chosun reported Shin was expected to visit the U.S. next week before the Feb. 19 deadline but now has no plans to leave South Korea prior to the date. The Verge noted it is possible he has already visited the U.S.

The latest patent infringement lawsuit development comes after the iPhone company filed a motion in late December for U.S. District Judge Lucy Koh to ban sales of more than 20 Samsung products such as the Galaxy S 4G and the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The 20 Samsung smartphones and tablets were previously found guilty of infringing Apple patents in August 2012, but Judge Koh had rejected Apple's bid for a sales ban. A federal appeals court, however, smoothed the way for Apple to reissue an injunction on the Samsung products.

Samsung has not had a successful experience worldwide against Apple. The Seoul Central District Court dismissed Samsung's bid to ban older Apple iPhones and iPads such as the iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, and iPad 2 in late 2013. The South Korean court stated Apple did not violate Samsung's patents on short message display methods or message grouping features. Samsung's bid in financial damages was also dismissed. Samsung claimed Apple owed the company 100 million won, or $95,100 in financial damages.

The San Jose court is planned to set a verdict after Feb. 19. Samsung could end up paying the iPhone company approximately $930 million. A second patent infringement lawsuit is scheduled between Apple and Samsung on March 31. Apple's Chief of Worldwide Marketing Phil Schiller has been confirmed to be one of the witnesses for the trial.

Apple revealed it has paid its leading outside law firm almost $60 million in wages throughout its patent litigation against Samsung.
