Sochi Winter Olympics 2014: U.S. Ekes Out Victory Over Russia In Men's Ice Hockey
The United States won the hockey match against Russia in what was undoubtedly the biggest event of the Sochi Winter Olympics, in a 4-2 shootout.
Malkin started strong leading Russian attacks early, with the offensive flow shifting back and forth going 13-13 in blocked shots before skillful captain Datsyuk scored to put Russia up. Kessler and defenseman combined for the equalizing shot for USA before Pavelski scored on a pass from Kane. The USA was defending Ovechkin and Radulov well, but Datsyuk could not be stopped as he scored his second goal of the night. Tyutin had a goal that was declined by refs, sending the game to overtime, which resulted in penalty shootout and USA won a harrowing 4-3 in a close game. Russia is not out of contention yet and can fight their way back into a rematch.
Older hockey fans may remember the "Miracle on Ice" which took place in the final seconds of the first period of the medal-round game between USA and Russia in the 1980 Winter Olympics, when U.S. hockey player scored on the goalie from distance with a second left as the Soviet defenders stood still waiting for the buzzer, eventually resulting in a 4-3 upset.
One of those Soviet defenders, Zinetula Bilyaletdinov, is now the coach of Team Russia in the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics. The goalie, Vladislav Tretiak, widely regarded as one of the best in history, is the Russian team's president.
