For those of you in the U.S. that were disappointed when the 2015 Moto X Play was unveiled, only to be released everywhere but in America, here's a hopeful rumor: The Motorola handset with the humongous battery could have a U.S. release date after all, rebranded as the Verizon exclusive DROID Maxx 2.

The second generation 2015 Motorola DROID Maxx has been the subject of rumors and leaks for a while, but when the Moto X Play was unveiled, it seemed to match those rumor reports.

The tech blogosphere apparently knew some of the specs and features, but just labeled it as the wrong device.

Or did they?

Perhaps labeling the leaks surrounding the Moto X Play as the upcoming DROID Maxx 2 was coincidentally right (minus the GSM radios of course). That's because, according to a new report from Phandroid, the second generation Moto DROID Maxx is looking like a Verizon-branded and banded Moto X Play - huge 3,650 mAh battery and all.

In the same vein, you can expect the $300-to-own pricing on the device, as Verizon has now dropped its subsidized phone plans.

In addition, Phandroid reports that the Verizon and Motorola-made DROID Turbo 2 may come with an "unbreakable display" made of POLED (plastic OLED) instead of glass. However, even with the use of plastic rather than glass, expect that phone to cost a lot more than the DROID Maxx 2 / Moto X Play.

Now that Motorola has unveiled and is in the process of launching their 2015 Moto X, Moto G, and Moto X Play lineup (the first of which has a probable release date of Sept. 3), expect the rumor mill to kick into overdrive, ahead of the suspected unveiling and release date of Moto's Verizon-branded phones. We may yet get confirmation of the Moto X Play/Maxx 2 rumor before Verizon officially shows off its Droids.

Last year, those launched in late October, so a similar release date window is expected for the second generation follow-up.
