IndyCar Driver Justin Wilson in Coma After Crash at Pocono Raceway [Watch]
Justin Wilson was airlifted from the Pocono Raceway following a crash during Sunday's IndyCar race and is in a coma.
IndyCar racer Sage Karam's car spun out of control during the race on Sunday, reports ESPN. His car hit the raceway wall, causing Wilson's car to veer left and strike an interior wall. In the incident, a piece of debris from Karam's car struck Wilson in the head causing a severe head injury.
Wilson was immediately attended to by the safety crew. He was airlifted by helicopter from the track and flown to Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedar Crest Hospital in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The 37-year-old IndyCar racer remains hospitalized in critical condition, IndyCar said in a statement
"It's just a tough one right now," Michael Andretti, car owner for Wilson, told ESPN. "Our thoughts and prayers are with Justin right now. We're going to see. Hopefully, he's OK."
Race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay's victory was overshadowed by concern for his friend and fellow racer. He said his thoughts were only with Wilson.
"All I know is that he was unconscious, he was not responding and he was airlifted," Hunter-Reay said after climbing from his race-winning Honda. "That's all very bad. I'm very worried right now."
Hunter-Reay also voiced ideas for improved safety equipment to protect drivers.
"Maybe in the future we can work toward something that resembles a canopy," he said. "Something that can give us a little bit of protection and still keep the tradition of the sport. Just to be [an] innocent bystander like that and get hit in the head with a nose cone is a scary thought."
Stefan Wilson, Justin's brother, tweeted on Sunday afternoon about Wilson's condition, "I have no update on his condition, he's been moved to the local hospital, and I'm trying to get there to be with him. Please don't speculate."
Wilson is a native of Sheffield, England. He entered this IndyCar season without a full-time ride. He signed on with Andretti, and Sunday's race was the sixth of seven races he had scheduled with the team.
