'Kung Fu Panda 3' Trailer: 'Star Wars' Featured in New Teaser [Watch]
The newest "Kung Fu Panda 3" trailer shows how Po and Luke Skywalker have more in common than just being a hero.
The latest teaser for "Kung Fu Panda 3" shows why: The two also share the burden of an less-than ideal father. New character Li may not be quite as evil as Darth Vader, but in the third installment of DreamWorks' "Kung Fu Panda," Po finds his long-lost dad a challenge anyway.
"I am your father," Li intoned in the trailer as he crawled up the stairs exhausted and breathing heavily. In disbelief, Po watched him with a bewildered look on his face.
According to Screen Rant, "Kung Fu Panda 3" shows the reunion of Po (Jack Black) with his absent father Li (Bryan Cranston). Instead of being pitted against each other in a deadly war of good and evil like Skywalker and Darth Vader, the two pandas will go on an adventure to seek a "secret panda paradise" and eventually find themselves band together to defeat a common danger. When a villain Kai (J.K. Simmons) rises determined to defeat all kung fu masters, Po has to train a kung fu army of fun-loving pandas to eradicate the threat and destroy his new nemesis.
Simmons, the Academy Award winning star of "Whiplash," is excited to tackle his animated role and is happy he is playing a tough guy once again.
"I've played a variety of badasses in my career," Simmons told USA Today in an interview. "I do like to mix it up. I like being a character actor playing different kinds of guys. Or, now, different kinds of beasts."
The bull character Kai is equipped with horns and a leather armor, the report from USA Today said. His weapon include two jade swords attached to long chains. His supernatural powers, the first for a villain in the franchise, make him particularly challenging for Po to overcome.
"He's somebody that's beyond Tai Lung, beyond Shen," co-director Jennifer Yuh Nelson told Entertainment Weekly, citing the previous villains that Po faced. She shared how the team came up with the new bad guy saying, "It was like 'You can't go brawler because Tai Lung was brawler. You can't go smarter because Shen was smarter. Where can you go? You have to go supernatural, bigger, and even more intimidating."
Joining Black, Cranston and Simmons for the third movie in the "Kung Fu Panda" series are Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, David Cross and Lucy Liu.
"Kung Fu Panda 3" will hit theaters on January 29, 2016.
