Five people were shot inside a home in Newark, NJ late Thursday night by an unidentified gunman as they mourned the recent passing of a friend.

The victims, ranging in age from 10 to 48, were among a number of mourners attending a vigil that was being held for a man who had been killed in a car accident on Clinton Avenue in Newark earlier in the day on Thursday, Patch reports.

The shootings occurred shortly after 10:00pm on Thursday on South 16th Street. According to Newark Police, the shooter pulled up in a dark colored vehicle, fired several shots in the house, got back into the vehicle and fled the scene. Police are investigating the identity of the gunman, but with no witnesses coming forth to provide descriptions of the man, the type of car he was driving or a license plate number, they have no leads so far.

"Upon arrival officers located five people suffering gunshot wounds," Newark Police spokesman Todd McClendon told pix11 News.

According to police, the victims of the shooting include a 10-year-old girl who was shot in the ankle, a 22-year-old woman who was shot in the buttocks, a 25-year-old man who was shot in the arm, a 46-year-old woman who was also shot in the arm and a 48-year-old man who was shot in both legs.

All five were taken to nearby University Hospital, where four of them were treated and released Friday morning. The fifth victim remains hospitalized, but is expected to recover fulliy, according to reports.

An unidentified woman told Patch that she was sitting on her porch a few block away from the scene of the crime when she "heard about 10 gunshots."

"I hauled a** inside [when the gunfire erupted]," she said.

Newark Police have assigned the department's Major Crimes Unit to investigate the case. They are reaching out to the public for help in apprehending the gunman, asking anybody with any information to call 1-877-NWK-TIPS.
