Fans of ABC's hit show “Scandal” have less than a month to wait to see what has become of Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) and President Grant (Tony Goldwyn).

When the show ended its fourth season things were looking good for Pope and Pres, who were making out on the White House balcony, acting optimistically erotic about their future as the tune “Here Come the Sun” played on in the background.

On the other hand, things were not going so well for Grant’s wife Mellie (Bellamy Young) who was kicked out of the White House just moments before. The 45-year-old actress who plays Mellie recognizes the emotional tug-of-war going on with her character.

Speaking to TV Line, she bemoaned the circumstances her character has found herself in, saying, “Poor Mellie, man… “It should be the best time in the world — she got her senate seat! — but it’s like the worst, because Fitz kicked her out. And he was so cold when he did it.”

The idea that her husband would be taking comfort in Olivia’s arms should be no surprise to her. “She knows in her heart that Fitz has Olivia on speed dial as the door is shutting behind her,” says Young, who lets fans of the show know that Season 5 “starts out in a world of hurt for Mellie.”

The character has already been through the wringer as she has had to deal with the death of her child Jerry Jr. “There is no greater pain than losing a child, but she’s absolutely devastated,” Young explains. “She’s having to regroup, but she’s sort of by herself completely, because everyone is alienated at this point."

Despite this Young sees Mellie as a survivor, saying, "She’s never going to give up without a fight — I mean, she’s Mellie! — but a lot of options are no longer open to her.”

In related news, “Scandal” creator Shonda Rhimes has just sold another series to ABC. As reported in the Hollywood Reporter, the show called “Brides of Christ" centers on a group of nuns fighting the closure of their Bronx-based convent while dealing with the foibles of some novice nuns who have recently joined the cloister.

“Scandal” returns for Season 5 on Thursday, Sept. 24 at 9 p.m on ABC.
